Check this quote from this eWeek article, Speech Industry Making Minor, Steady Gains:
As the speech technology’s major trade show kicks off this week in New York, don’t expect to hear grandiose announcements of computers and humans speaking in harmony. Expect instead a steady stream of product updates and new launches from companies … focused on honing speech recognition and text-to-speech voices as the industry enters a phase of realism promising steady growth.
Another piece of evidence for a slow rise for AI. More and more we’ll be talking to computers on the phone and they’ll be getting slowly more sophisticated and intelligent. People generally won’t notice, but will treat the machines more and more as if they’re intelligent, until one day we just talk to them the way we would with any help desk operator, or other service person. Of course, sometimes that doesn’t require much intelligence.
